So I need a decoder that will work in Vista. What should I download? I tried use the MpaDecFilter.ax but got an error message when doing the run MpaDecFilter.ax.
Audio and video work just fine in Live TV.

Where can I find a decoder that is certain to work with Vista?
Does the recorded mpeg file contain audio information? Can it be converted to say an avi or divx file to regain audio without doing an install of a decoder?

You should be able to convert and still have the audio from the program stream as long as the converter has the appropriate decoders.

Are there any good free converters out there that you can suggest.
I hate not being able to record shows.

It seems weird to me that live TV works and recorded shows don't. I'm hoping that graphedit works on vista but could look at the graphs in live tv mode and when playing back a recording and see if there is anything weird in the audio path.

FYI,
There are converters built into GBPVR which use ffmpeg to do the transcode.
Try doing a transcode from within GBPVR as a start.

Here's how to get graphedit working.

go to http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=GraphEdit
and download the tool from the mirror site. The main site is on microsoft's server and requires the validation hassle.
Unpack the zip file into a directory of your choice

First play LiveTV for a few seconds and quit out of GBPVR.

Go back to the graphedit dir and double click on graphedit.exe.

Go to file>open graph and navigate to the gbpvr install directory and select the lastgraph.grf.
It will open the graph up and you can see all the direct show filters that it was trying to use. There should be lines connecting them all together showing you the data flow.

Some of the filters will allow you to look at properties for the filter using a right mouse click.

Go back into GBPVR and play a recording and quit out of GBPVR and bring the graph up the same way. See if there are disconnected filters.

Ok I will try that.

I agree its weird that live tv is fine but recorded tv is picture only, no sound. This problem has occurred for several people (I did a search) and the common suggestion was to try a different mpeg decoder. I tried one but couldn't get it to work.
