is there a difference in the properties of the files it will and wont play?

The only thing that differs between each file is the file name and the track title.

new media player ?
there must be a difference if it plays one and not the other
maybe repair connection ?
unless you have move the files seems like it cant find them to me
thats winamp does with old playlists
try moving some files to another location then change the directory to point there
