Can anyone confirm that the only way to tune in to part-time and shared channels is to Config/Capture Sources/Edit/Map Digital.../Retune at the times these channels are actually broadcasting? or have I missed something?

Also is there anyway to change the default recording quality to High?

correct. BBC 3 & 4 (for example) need to be tuned when they are on air after 7pm.

with DVB the recording quality is irrelevant as the tuner just writes the dvb stream to disk. You can ignore this setting as the quality depends purely on what the station transmits. For example on UK History, they sometimes show old shows in low quality 4:3 format instead if good quality 16:9.

Yes, you need to do that, but only the once.

re: recording quality - I've done a bit of research on digital TV broadcasting in the last couple of days but that is so obvious - patently my research is not yet complete... :o

As to the other point, I've never had an issue with it as regards my STB's - they apparently setup all the channels no matter when you do an autotune (althought, I have never tested this). I do have a vague memory of reading something in the last week or so about each channel in a multiplexed stream carrying the metadata for all the channels in the stream (possible specific to DVB-T) - looks like an interesting line of enquiry to pursue...

Anyway gED thanks for that...

Thanks sub - I had spotted that the tuning info is stored in gpr.db3 and that retuning doesn't remove the other half of the part-time program..

It seems be a UK-ism, not used elsewhere. Its probably a pretty small change to get it working with the channels that aren't running at scan time, but we dont have any channel like that here in New Zealand, so I had no easy way to test it. Its never managed to make it far enough up the priority list for me to actually look into fixing it, especially given the simple work around.

That wasn't a complaint btw - gbpvr is spot on, it's just that little details like that fascinate me - really gives you the edge when it comes to Trivial Pursuits.
