This is no big deal. I'm just wondering what I did wrong.

Visited the states last week and was lucky enough to find a Fry's Electronics in Indianapolis. For those of you outside the states, Fry's is roughly the size of a blimp hanger and is stuffed with all kinds of electronics and computer parts. I think I was in there for 4 hours.

Anyway, I picked up a 500GB Maxtor drive for $99.00.

I copied the entire contents of my recordings drive to my external backup drive. Installed the new drive and copied everything back. The drive has the same drive letter, same folder structure etc.

Fired up GBPVR - no recordings. Tried "import programs" got "programs already in place or location changed"

I did not back up my recording-dump.xml file because GBPVR is installed on a seperate drive that was not touched.

When I first fired up the machine after installing the new blank drive GBPVR tried to install itself just after windows boot. No clue at all how this happened but I suspect this is where my problem came from.

The point when you started the machine up with the new drive in it but no recordings on it would have let the recording service see that there were entries in the database that weren't on disk - it would then 'tidy up' the database and remove them.
Whenever this has happened to me, then running the 'import recordings' in the plugins section of config and pointing to the file in the program files\devnz\gbpvr directory has restored things ok. That is if it is run the same day, before the EPG update is done that would overwrite the file.

That must be it. It was late by the time the 100 or so gigs of recordings finished transferring to the new drive. When I saw there was a problem I decided to work on it the next morning. EPG must have updated.

Gee, why doesn't Sub warn people to to back up their XML files before monkeying with the system?? Big Grin

Actually you get two days. Each night it renames recording-dump.xml to recording-dump.xml.bak, then exports the recording list to recording-dump.xml.bak.

Do you still have recording-dump.xml.bak?

If you're on NTFS disks, it also writes the recording meta data to each recording (in Alternate Data Stream), which can be used to rebuild your recording list with a utility on the wiki.

He mentioned that he visited Fry's. Newegg has a WD for $109. Tiget Direct had one a while back as well. I paid $119 2 months ago and still can't complain. Dang, this is a great time to buy PC hardware!

Thanks Sub - I have linked to this post for next time. I did find recording-dump.xml.bak and had a look at it but it only had one old show listed.

I deleted all of the recordings. It was a good opurtunity to get rid of all the shows that my girlfriend swears she is going to watch "someday" (some were over a year old!).

I told the girfriend it was all your fault - lol.
