My question is whether the video capture card is an absolute requirement to run GB-PVR? The library features seem to be very nice, and I wondered whether I could use them alone. Thanks for any help/info.

A video capture card or TV tuner is not required, although obviously you won't be able to use the cool features like the TV Guide and recordings.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I just need something that can be the vide equivalent of iTunes for all my various video media; DVD rips, HD files (.mkv, VC-1, AVC h.264 .TS, HD-WMV, HD-DivX) files etc. and DivX/XviD. I hope this'll do it. I'll give it a shot this weekend.
I don't have any TV source right now, just a large archive of movies I've ripped from DVDs and HD sources. Thus, I have no need for recording TV, guides or anythign like that.

the only thing is the video folder doesnt look as nice as the recording folder thats why i say try using video archive it may be able to import them so you get a better looking menu but im not sure if uses the data written to the folder while recording or just looks at the file name

I had a pc set up like this for the last year and a half. It was really just a file browser (with mce remote) for my video collection as well as playing shows I recorded on another pc. I never set it up as a true client and it actually functioned just fine this way.

The menu was pared down to just video library, music library, weather, net radio and system.

However, I finally broke down last week and placed a tuner card in this pc and it is very nice to be able to pause live tv etc.

I started out with GBpvr as strictly a front end to make playing my music collection easier, it's still it's main function. I however have used it to record my wife's soap opera's so i don't have to deal with them. Smile
