found a registry setting that enables a 'denoise' setting in avivo section of catalyst control panel..Smile
the controls seem uncomplete, but there is an 'enable' check box..
so i unchecked it...Big Grin
and it does seem to have disabled completely the ghosting...
[on mine it wasn't very bad actually]
i changed the access from noone to Everyone..Smile
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI\ACE\Settings\Graphics\MMVideo]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI\ACE\Settings\Graphics\MMVideo\Denoise]
"Accessible"="Everyone"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI\ACE\Settings\Graphics\MMVideo\EdgeEnhance]
"Accessible"="Everyone"
save as something.reg and double click it..
then crank up catalyst and look in avivo settings...
only seems to work on X1xxx cards, so i do think it is the real avivo codec settings...

i just wish they'd let US choose which features WE want, for what looks good to us... people with noisy signals need the feature, but it wrecks the rest of us!
cuz not everyone has a good 'eye' or the same equip. quirks or even cares about some aspects of the video..
it's funny when even THEY don't know where certain settings are stored in their own software...

And why does the 'control panel' need more mem and cpu than some 3d games?!!
that's rediculous... they're just settings people...it doesn't have to be 100+ megs and look nice..i better not have to be in there that often!

i appreciate Sub's free software more and more, since now even Adobe and other $500+ software has stupid toolbars added in the install!! GRRRR

i also find it amazing that linux is so efficient with hardware, when the devs are many, and far between...yet their solutions are more complete and efficient than M$ almost every time..

anyways, sorry to go off...
yea, there's lots of .reg stuff for nvidias...
easy to tweak the looks on them...not so much with the acceleration tho..

just gotta find a sweet driver...nvidia's real picky abou that..

many thanks pBS - wierd but now i get a very good (comparitively) picture!

what i did :

- removed the ATI drivers and set on board video (in preparation of pulling ATI card)

- used the on board nvidia card for a bit
- changed bios back to PCI-E vga card and installed ATI drivers once more (in another attempt to get it working)
- removed nvidia vga drivers

as i mention, live TV is much better, although a bit fuzzy when text (tv guide, for example) is displayed on screen (not gbpvr tv guide, the cable one)

so - am a lot happier although work still to be done.

and thoroughly agree - there is a market out there for someone to come up with a media orientated vga card forgetting about 3d and concentrating on mpg and also HD.

I just did the denoise registry mod on my ATI 2400pro, and now the fog is finally off my screen. If people missed it, you can do it with other ATI cards and in XP. A google search for TRdenoise and Registry should bring up the procedure. There's a three-page thread from AVSforum I used for the walkthrough, although it wasn't as specific as needed and took a few head scratches to make sure I was modifying the right thing.
