DVB Aspect ratio

When watching a recording from my sat card, the aspect ratio is incorrect (it looks to be 2.35:1) If I hit F7 an cycle back through to Auto, then it displays correctly as 4:3 or 16:9.

However, when I skip ahead again, the aspect ratio goes back to the 2.35:1, until I skip back to auto.
Why does the auto work only after I change to it, even though when the file is first played, it should be in auto mode anyway?

These symptoms are usually a sign that something else is also trying to manage the aspect ratio, probably the video decoder or something like ffdshow.

I'll check the setup in the Nvidia codec.

I think there was something in there for aspect ratio.

In the nvidia video decoder the aspect ratio should be set to anamorphic.

I assume there is now way to get rid of the horrible black box which is present on C4 programming (particulary Family Guy - which must still be in 4:3 format)
I thought each program on DVB-S would transmit it's aspect ratio as well. I can view using centre cut, but I wish to transcode these to xvid for a friend, so would not to crop / resize to remove the borders as well.

Unfortunately no. The problem is caused by TV3/C4 being transmitted as 16:9 at all times, with any 4:3 content having black bars added on the left/right prior to transmission. (ie, GB-PVR is still just receiving a 16:9 video)

TV3 seem to be better than C4, but I think that is because C4 play a lot more older stuff, which are all in 4:3.

Most of the programming on TV3 is now 16:9 - and I only see a few ads which are boxed. I guess when they agreed to purcase "All New" family guy that they had not thought of switching to 16:9

havent you watched the news its a shocker
you get a story and the aspect changes like 5 times in a minute
i dont know what you call bad
i have my tv set slightly zoomed so that its not as bad but you lose a bit of picture
also have the * key on remote set to adjust aspect if its really pissing me off
