you can do both, it all depends on which you prefure, I use xmltv (over the internet), which I think is the way to go. Its all documented in the wiki and if you do a search on here you`ll find alot of info too.

Cheers

The Freeview EPG comes over-the-air, it's the same source as a set top box would use.

Hi
Should have worded the question a bit better, i am using 1.0.16 and no downloaded pluggins . when i click on update epg in the config menu is the update coming over the air via the tv card or over the internet . the only reason i ask is that i am putting together another pc just to run gbpvr this will be networked to my main pc and i dont want to allow the gbpv pc access to the the internet at all . If it uses the internet to get epg updates i will have to have a rethink
cheers guys

if you are happy with the EPG you get on freeview, stick to over-the-air as it is simpler.

If you want better / more detailed programme descriptions (from radio times), you should use xmltvgui from http://www.birtles.org.uk/xmltv/

If you look at your capture source in config it should say where you set the EPG update to come from. Personally, I find the RadioTimes EPG better, but others use the off-air EPG fine.
If you want to deny internet access, but it is networked to your main pc, you could share a downloaded (by main machine) xmltv data file.

What it uses depends on the EPG source you select when you setup your capture source. In the UK you can use xmltv, or if you're using DVB card then the DVB EPG options is also possible. If you're using an analog card like a PVR150, then you have to use xmltv.
