What is the limiting factor which effects the responsiveness of the remote control for the MVP ?

is it the power of the mvp itself, the network connection, or the actual system running the gbpvr software, the fact that the mvp is already playing music or video etc etc.

On my system the remote is usable but you do need to be patient as its about 1 - 2 secs per click of the remote

just going through the main menu its reasonably ok as you get used to it, but once you start using it on something like the jukebox to select tracks it becomes a nightmare, as you constantly end up clicking past the tracks you want to select or selecting the wrong one.

Is there anything I can do to improve responsiveness, as for me its the last area of gbpvr where there seems to be problems which would stop my wife from using it, and therefore being able to record programs or listen to music herself. At the moment I still get the oh its a computer thingy you'll need to do it   [Image: rock.gif]

ie the great nirvana for all these PVR systems is "can non-technical folk use it just like changing channel on the TV"

any suggestions gratefully received

Hi tkgafs,

when using Hauppauges software how responsive is the MVP?

So far I have found GBPVR on MVP to be quite respsonive but I don't use the Jukebox plugin so the TV Guide would be the largest navigation area for me.

I guess considerations outside of the remote control area would be:

- network: how are you connecting to the MVP
o wireless, 10Mb, 100Mb, via router, cross over
- Computer: what processor/motherboard are you running
- HDD: I assume nice fast 7200RPM disk. Do you have one dedicated for recordings, live TV, or is it one drive for everything

Cheers,
Colin.

Hello Colin,

the haupagge software works pretty much at the same speed

my mvp is connected by a crossover 10mb 3com ethernet card after trying to use a 100mb usb ethernet card with very poor results

the processor is a amd duron 1800 overclocked to 2100

512mb ram
motherboard is Syntax sv266a which has a via kt266a chipset
hd is 80mb 7200rpm maxtor drive for videos and mp3s
hd for operating system & gbpvr software is 60gb 7200rpm IBM drive

There are always going to be quite high overheads associated with the way the MVP is design. A lot goes on when you press a key on you MVP remote.

- Detecting the keypress, the MVP send a packet across the network to let GB-PVR know.
- GB-PVR generates a screen
- GB-PVR converts the screen from RGB to YUY2
- GB-PVR compresses the image
- GB-PVR send the image across the network to the MVP.
- MVP uncompresses the image
- MVP displays the image.

When the MVP is playing video or music at the same time, it is less responsive and takes a longer period of time to decompress and disply the image.

Is there anything that we can do to the network to make it faster? Router settings or something?

There are only 20 or so buttons on the remote, couldn't GB-PVR generate, convert and compress all possible next screens? Would that save alot of time?

Also, if I bought at PVR 350, the channels would change faster right?

Tha faster your computer, the faster the screens are generated and compressed, which ultimately results in a more responsive UI.

No, the channels wouldn't change any faster.

lol [Image: biggrin.gif] creative thinking but no it wouldn't help, it would just use 20 times as much processing power resulting even slower response times. Generating one screen and converting it to YUY2 and compressing it takes about 1/2 second. Generating 20 of these would take 10 seconds.
