Name of dongle.bin.config?

I have a question, I've seen the information on the mvpmc share in several places. I am thinking of creating a config file to autostart the MVP in emulation mode.

My question is, should the config file be named dongle.bin.config even though the dongle itself is named something else (like dongle-mvpmc-xxxx.bin)?
xxxx is the version of the mvpmc dongle (I have re-named it so that I have the original dongle.bin to revert to if any problems arise and I also know what version I am running)?

It's a good idea to keep renamed dongles in the dongle directory for easy access.

However, you need to have the file that you want to use named as "dongle.bin". That is the specific file name that is being served to the MVP. Any files of any other name in the dongle directory are ignored.

For autostart, you create a MVPMC sub-directory directly under the dongle-directory. There you put dongle.bin.config, which is a text file. Mine has this one line in it:

mvpmc -a 16:9 -m pal --emulate ? --startup emulate

Of course you need to adjust as per your setup.

That should get you going. And the simple fall-back is just to put the original GBPVR dongle.bin in the directory. Then all is back to normal.

You can actually name the file anything that you want, just leave the .bin extension in place. I have 3 files right now:

dongle.bin (that came with GBPVR)
mvpmc0720.bin (last released version)
mvpmc1014.bin (alpha test version)

All 3 appear in the drop down list in the config all and this lets me quickly select a particular dongle for testing.

Yep - that's true. Forgot to mention that. :o

I always do it the other way around though. Then I don't have to start the config app and have recordings restart. It's just much faster and more flexible, as I can always go to the directory and at a glance see what dongle is currently in production and swap if needed. Rolleyes

-HarryH3

This exactly what I have, I have different files in the Dongle directory and change via GBPVR config.

It works fine to load a dongle file with another name, what I wonder is whether I need to change the name of dongle.bin.config (to align with the name I have on the dongle that is loaded) in order to get this to work or if it is a universal config file that is loaded no matter what the actual filename of the dongle is.

I think that the code in mvpmc only looks for the name dongle.bin.config. It doesn't care what the name of the dongle itself is, as GBPVR opens the dongle file. Only mvpmc looks for the .config file.

OK, then it should work no matter what.

nia has got a point, I never thought of it that way...
You mean that if I just replace the file (that I have set in Config to upload) then I get the new version the next time I start the MVP. That sounds very logical, but I never thought of it that way. I think I'll revert to that as soon as I get home, a nice way to change version without interrupting recordings.

Well - you actually need to power-cycle completely - but that's probably what you ment. Wink

Otherwise, you got the point exactly Big Grin

I took the plunge and tried the MVPMC dongle last night (20070830). Seems to work great in my initial test. Quicker response to remote and power off/on.

However, I couldn't get it to start up in emulation mode, and I can't find a clear answer on these questions:

I named the dongle mvpmc.bin. Should the config file be named mvpmc.bin.config or dongle.bin.config?

Where should the .config file be? In the \dongle directory or in a directory under \dongle (if so, named what?).

Once I get this working then I can move on to WOL. Big Grin
Should this line be all I need in .config?

mvpmc --startup emulate --emulate ? --em-wolwt 30 &

Thanks
What, me worry?

dongle.bin.config

The actual directory doesn't matter. It is loaded through a Windows share called mvpmc using a Guest (not Everyone!) account.

No instead of "?" it should be the IP address of your GBPVR server. Also the 30 second wait that you show could be high. This is how long to wait after mvpmc can ping your machine to the time that the GBPVR MVP server is ready. It's use is optional.
