I have a 42" AKAI HDTV Plasma (manual says 1024x1024 native resolution) and am wondering what is the "ideal" computer display resolution to use (to minimize scaling, etc.). This computer is ONLY used for PVR (I typically do maintenance using Ultra-VNC on my laptop vs. using keyboard/mouse on the computer itself).

Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

That's a funky resolution.

I would google the exact model number & HTPC to see if anyone else is hooking a PC up to this.

I think it's 1024x768, not 1024x1024
If that's the case then that would be the best resolution to use

Alot of the high-def plasma panels manufactured by Fujitsu a couple of years ago (and included in serveral other brands), use this odd-ball 1024x1024 resolution so he is probably correct that it is that resolution.

ahh, you are correct. a quick search does show some AKAI Plasmas with 1024x1024 res.
weird....
Hmmm, not sure what the best res. would be to use.
You could try a native 16:9 resolution (eg 1024x576, 1280x720, 1920x1080) and see how those look.
Failing that I would take nitrogen_widget's advice and do a google search for your model number + HTPC to see what you can find...

If the video card controls can't do it, I would start by looking at third-party resolution control programs to see if any can do 1024x1024 with proper scaling since it's generally considered better to have the computer do the scaling than the TV.

Aside from that, I'd make sure to feed the TV a signal higher res than it can display instead of lower. No sense in degrading the picture before it even gets to the TV.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

I have an old 42" Hitachi PMA 400e with the same resolution. The panel is actually only 512 lines interlaced, sort of 1024i if you like.

I currently run my MVP through it, but back in the day when I was tinkering with mce 2005 I found I had most success with the following resolutions:

1024x768 when I was trying to read text, although the aspect ratio was way out on pictures/ video (mce 2005 could correct that nicely, though and I suspect GBPVR could too)

1366x768 when mostly watching DVDs / media center app running, then let the panel downscale the picture.

I did have a go with Powerstrip http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm making custom resoultions, but I found that the picture would get too elongated and lose the top + bottom. Not good when you lose the task bar!

I will be revisiting this issue shortly myself, as I am about to retire my MVP from the main TV and replace it with a client PC so I can use 4OD + BBC Iplayer.

My father has one that has this resolution. I *THINK* it's ok to feed it a regular 720p signal and it will figure it out (It has component and DVI and those are typical signals.) If not, try the other suggestions above.
