I can see some advantages in going to Vista for DVB-T HD, such as better supported hardware acceleration in my case, etc., but have heard rumours that if/when US broadcasters were to "DRM" their shows, I could be stuffed in recording and playing back such shows (at least in HD?). Anyone have some knowledge they wish to share on this subject?
Regards,
Hasso

I have no knowledge other than what has happened to me and I worry about Vista and DRM. In fact, I think XP SP3 is going to DRM'up XP.
I can say that using a DVD Recorder connected to my digital TV there are both some premium and 'standard' channels that won't record to the dvd side but will to the VHS side. It seems they're flagged but I've read recently that in the states when it's all HD, they may have a problem flagging stations.
My thoughts are the cable systems want to force people to rent/buy their dvr's so they make it harder for us to record them ourselves.
It'll be interesting (and maybe expensive) to see what happens.

I'm not worried much about it. Every time they come up with some super ultimate copy protection, someone bypasses it a week later. The sad part is that all the harebrained copy protection pretty much does is annoy the people who are trying to follow the rules to use it. The only reason HD-DVD and Blu-Ray copy protection was bypassed so quickly is because a guy jumped through all the hoops and paid the money to make it work and it still didn't work and he got mad. The more they force people to become "pirates" just to use something they fully paid for, the more pirating they create and the larger the amount of people who start flipping them the middle finger.

Why do many people use programs like GBPVR and the like instead of Windows Media Center or a Tivo? Because it's freedom. Eventually they'll piss enough people off. I think there's currently a lawsuit against Sony for its lame-o game copy protection that would burn out people's DVD drives. Music artists are getting ready to sue the RIAA, and judges are starting to get fed up with the RIAA's "John Doe" lawsuits. Verizon just told the government to take a hike on its internet monitoring scam.

Now I'm rambling a bit, but hey. Shortly after the wonder that was Macrovision on VHS tapes, there were relatively-cheap boxes that bypassed it. Companies trying to restrict consumers every way they can will anger some people, but those some people will know how to bypass those restrictions if they look around a bit.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

Yep. That's the reason I get my music elsewhere. I tried paying for it from Zune and iTunes only to find when I put the song on an SD card to play in the stereo of my truck, I got "incompatible format". Or put it on a microSD card for my phone, something like "licensing restricts the media to be played in this device". Ok, I have no problem buying my music legally but they want me to also buy their players or just listen to it on my computer? No thanks.

I'm not as worried about DRM as I was a few months ago. iTunes and Amazon are selling clean MP3's. Most of the networks are making most oftheir prime time shows available for download. I think DRM is finally dying off.

Most of Vista's DRM is there because of restrictions from the Blu-Ray folks. If Blu-Ray backs down some we may see some patches from M$ loosening Vista DRM. This is what I'm waiting for.

Yes, my main concern was that I'd end up taping DRM protected broadcasts for later viewing and then wouldn't be able to play them afterwards using Vista.
