yeah, i know that vmware does not like to hear anything about ESX beeing just some customized linux... it still is & if you ever see it in action you'll change your opinion about running a 2008 server inside a VM

Agreed, clusters of VMWare servers are very useful - the virtual hardware is standardised, backup is trivial and snapshots can be saved/restored on the fly.

VESA to me is 640x480,800x600,1024x768 ect. Not wide screen resolutions.
I've used GeexBox for about 3 yrs & one of the biggest problems is the lack of custom resolutions for HDTV's & lack of Overscan for Standard TV's.

FB with Vidix & an ATI card is great for decoding video. It takes minimal CPU power, but no overscan control.

FB with Nvidia gives overscan control with certain cards, but vidix acceleration is spotty & nvtv for TV out is a pain to configure.
As a Rule you need more CPU power with Nvidia.

Now, Geexbox has an X version that can pull custom widescreen resolutions but, your still stuck using open source drivers & the x version only uses VGA/digital out for connection to LCD TV's/monitors.

You need even more CPU power to watch standard video smoothly & a big cpu to watch HD because there is no hardware video acceleration beyond standard XV using open source drivers.

There doesn't seem to be a win/win situation with Linux when it comes to video.

mvallevand Wrote:No matter what platform HD requires horsepower. Some people think that linux offers a magic bullet but it doesn't. That is why I like embedded devices.

CPU's & motherboards are getting cheaper & cheaper so buying horsepower isn't that big a deal anymore, but I personally don't feel I should a dual core cpu to watch HD.

I think a a more conservative cpu like a pentium M paired with a good GPU should be all that's needed.

I don't think Linux is a magic bullet, I think it's a bunch of Gotcha's & a pain in the butt.

But, I have watched 1080i transport stream movie trailer's on a p3 833mhz PC with an nvidia fx5200 & Xine with XVMC enabled with very little skipping.

Granted the CPU is pegged, but stuff like that shows me the possible potential.
But, I couldn't do that with an fx6200 because it wasn't supported by XVMC.
Another gotcha.

I think embedded devices are great also.
But the closest I can get to making my own is to take cheap hardware load Linux on it & get it to do what I want.

mvallevand Wrote:There's two things in play here mvpmc can do what any linux app can do subject to the hardware so the possibilities are endless The Hauppauge VNC stuff is just one specific app (we know are calling mvpmc plugins) which I named emulation mode and it does require a server. I guess you could write a minimal python server on the client that would did let emulation mode run but I consider that a waste of time.

Martin

This is where I get lost. Smile
I have been reading about this stuff but don't really know it.
I can't even make heads or tails of your source code for MVPMC yet so i've got a long way to go so if it seems like I don't know what i'm talking about let me know & if it's too much trouble to explain point me in the right direction via a link so I can read it myself.

If Myth was easy to install, configure, & run i'd be using that.
But it isn't.

I'm using GBPVR because it is easy to install, configure, & run.
It just works.
I occasionally have some problems, but the forum here is actually helpful.
If I had a dollar for everytime someone on the Myth forums told me to RTFM everytime I had a question or problem I could afford to pay someone to build me a myth system.Sad

Fair enough, I get as much fun out of installing and fiddling with it as actually watching it Smile but that is definitely not for everyone.

I can use vlc under linux (Ubuntu Hardy) with my WinTV PVR USB2 to watch live or save to disk (I haven't tried streaming). To make adjustments, like bitrate, resolution, etc., you write values to special files under /sys/class/pvrusb2.

Just an update on this thread, still haven't gotten to replacing my machine, so I reinstalled GBPVR.

As you can see in the pics, config is now as it should not like a few months ago when it was completely blank, the error I am getting now is with the video renderer, VMR9 is not installed/MPEG-2 demultiplexer is also not installed. Maybe somebody more technically adept in video renderers can try.

Tried with Ubuntu 8.04, Wine 1.1.4 and GBPVR 1.2.13

Let me reiterate, GBPVR still does not run in Linux nor is it supported. I did this to try out the Wine really and hopefully GBPVR, because I don't like MythTV.

Again, just an update, using Wine 1.1.14. Now able to run PVRX2 menu.
Still not functioning but Wine has definitely been improving before I only got as far as the config (see previous posts). Take note of the small GBPVR icon on the taskbar, referring to the recording service.

Installed Net 2.0 using winetricks and vcredist.exe
VMR9 is still not available, used Overlay

here is pic. That is from my Ubuntu Hardy machine.
