While MLPanel was running did you use the Yellow Button (^Y) to toggle over to slideshow mode. If you have tried that can you re-create the problem and post the Interfaces.dll.log please.

here's the log you asked for. I'm still not sure why no slideshow, and I have tried the yellow button, which doesn't seem to do anything.

The log doesn't show the Yellow Button (or CTRL+Y) being pressed. The only Keypresses I can find are

OnKeyDown INFO Key Pressed: ShiftKey, Shift

and since that's not a key combination that MLP supports it causes the plugin to exit

Are you using a remote or a keyboard? If you are using a remote, is it possible that the yellow button has been mapped to another value by HIP or something?

It shouldn't be remapped in the remote--I double checked the irremote.ini configuration settings and PVRX2.EXE gets {ctrl}Y, and I'm not running a fancier remote dealie. The yellow button still exits MLPanel.

However, I did press control y on my keyboard and it did change to the picture screensaver. Fortunately MLpanel seems to remember this setting between restarts of PVRX2, so the problem--if not the mystery--is solved for now.

It's great that you've got it working with the keyboard. MLPanel remembers 4 settings: not playing music/not playing with slideshow/playing music/playing with slideshow... so once you've got them all set the way you want using the keyboard, you should be all set.

I'm not too keen on mysteries thought, so if you can find the time, it might be useful if you started up MLPanel and used CRTL+Y on your keyboard a couple of times, the posted your Interfaces.dll log...
