I doubt the PCI-e version would be the issue, as the board and graphics card are of a similarish vintage, and the much newer 8600GT graphics card works without problem on the board. Of course, I could well be wrong though!

Still no boot, or rather no post I suppose I should say as nothing happens apart from the fans spinning, even with everything else disconnected. Tried installing all the motherboard drivers too, but this made no difference.

Well actually, it did make a difference. It made things worse. With the onboard VGA drivers installed, Windows kept shutting down at random moments, reporting a problem with ati2dvag. Uninistalling them returned everything to normal.

But it's been one disaster after another so far. My XCard (yes I still use one of them, though the AIW with its scart output was supposed to start weaning me off it) refuses to install now; it gets to the very end of the driver install process and then the computer reboots. This happened before and after the motherboard drivers were installed, and before and after my Hauppauge cards (PVR 150 and Nova-s Plus) were installed, so I guess it can't be a driver conflict.

Is it possible that the fact it is still installed on my original hard disk- which is now the D drive in my computer where all my old recordings are- is causing a problem? I didn't think to uninstall it before rebuilding the computer, and I'm not sure how you uninstall drivers from a D drive, as I presume the Control Panel route only deals with the C drive. Anyway, it would seem odd if that should be the cause when the D drive is not involved in the driver installing process, and my old Hauppauge card installed with no problem.

So the idea of a computer with a graphics card that could possibly one day make my XCard obselete, has ended with a computer with no decent TV output at all. I tried using the composite output from the motherboard's Xpress 200 onboard graphics (without the VGA drivers installed of course), and the picture is very ropey, and refuses to fill the screen. What's more, my Athlon 64 3000+ runs at around 90% for just standard definition MPEG2.

And I haven't even begun to mention that GBPVR itself won't work at all so far; the configuration (which I'm updating from the files copied from the old disk- I basically just need to change the satellite tuner and the recordings locations), craps out when I try to save it, usually saying that the database is locked. I don't expect any help with this though as I'm still on an old, Xcard friendly version.

If anyone has any ideas about any of the above problems, I would love to hear them. Really love to!

if it is not posting etc I would try resetting the bios to see if that helps, a mates brand new mobo wouldn't post at all and it seems that the bios was somehow corrupted.

I would reset the bios then go back in and disable the onboard or change to pci as first option, put the card back in and see what happens.

That's a thought: while you're at it, have you checked for an updated BIOS for your MoBo?

No I haven't checked if it's got the most recent BIOS; I'll do so later, thank you. Not convinced it'll be the problem, given that the board does post happily with a different PCI-e card, and no graphics card at all, and given that when it doesn't post, there is no power to the DVD drive either. But you just never know do you; it could just be some weird compatibility problem with this particular ATI board that was fixed at some point.

Thanks again,

OK, updated the BIOS but it's made no difference to either the AIW card (still no post), or my XCard (still reboots just before installation process completes).

Totally buggered and a bit stumped.

I just found out the BSOD message when the system reboots on installing the XCard; something to do with trying to execute non-executable memory. Does this mean anything to anyone, and point to where the problem may be?

Thanks again,

Hello,

Just resurrecting this post as I managed to get my hands on a new power supply; a better quality Antec Neo HE 380 with three 12V rails rather than one, and a 24 pin motherboard connector, which the old one didn't have.

And guess what, exactly the same thing happens. With the AIW graphics card installed it won't boot and the DVD Drive won't open, whereas without the graphics card everything is normal. I tried disabling the onboard graphics but it made no difference.

Does anyone have a good explanation for the DVD drive business? It just seems odd to me that the graphics card should somehow stop any power getting to the DVD drive; by the sounds of things, I'm pretty sure the hard drives are spinning up though. I would have thought the new PSU would have solved this, so I'm at a loss to think of what might be going on.

Thanks for any ideas,

Frazer
