ARRRRRRRRRRRRRghhhhhhhhhhhhhh I'm going up the wall.

My old P4 gbpvr server is now too central to our home and great trouble would arise if it died. It's also a touch slow for HD stuff - So, I'm building up a replacement and will make the old one the spare.

I had an Asrock mobo and got a cheap P4 Pentium D from ebay. All went well and the machine was built up with the software etc, with the hardware to be nicked from the old machine. S3 standby was working perfectly.

Some time later (about a month) I acquired a Core 2 duo E6400, also from ebay. Installed and noticed a great improvement with HD.

BUT - S3 standby no longer works.

It is only tonight that I have pinned it down to the CPU making the difference, by swapping back and forth.

There is so much stuff out on the internet about S3 problems that it is difficult finding information out of the noise. But I have a feeling that XP may be involved with the root cause.

I anyone else has noticed this after an upgrade, I'd be grateful to hear.

Standby just seems to be one of those "features" of Windows that has more bugs than a cheap motel. I have systems that are running Win98se, Win2K Pro, XP Home, and Vista Home but NONE of them reliably go into standby on their own. Sad

I use the XP system in my sig daily, yet sometimes I'll find it sleeping in the morning, while most times it didn't go to sleep at all overnight. There are no changes made to the system, it just does its own thing when it comes to deciding about standby...

I have the same CPU and on a clean new build with vista hp it wouldn't sleep. I gave up at that point, now it keeps the living room warm all night.

Have recently moved alot of my old hardware to a new case, with a new motherboard, and am experiencing similar problems with regard to s3 - basically, the machine wont do it properly - the fans still spin. There seems to be a fair bit of consistency regarding the need for the bios to be set properly to support s3 prior to xp being installed, if it isnt it apparently wont work properly. If bios wasnt setup properly, then dumppo.exe (a tool from microsoft) can be used to changed what mode standby equates to, and set it to properly enter s3 that way. I have the dumppo tool, but not yet tried it on my htpc to see if it fixes the problem. In all likelihood, you've already come across this info, but thought I'd chip in just in case its useful.

With mine, Pentium D = S3 fine. Core 2 Dup = no S3, only S1 (though it thinks it's S3). Everything else no change at all.

Next step, later today, is to get the c2d back in and try this microsoft hotfix, which has been suggested - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256

After that SP3 will get a try.
