OK, that change made it capable of tuning. I was able to see and hear programs in the channel mapping dialogue, but after mapping 52 channels and returning to the main config screen, the config application hung.
It had been hanging previously, (in fact I always had to start again from scratch each time I started up config, because of this) but I had assumed that the hang was an artifact of being unable to access the hardware. but being able to access the hardware now meant that wasn't the case. Process explorer showed no I/O activity and no CPU activity.
On a hunch, I saved a copy of the gbpvr and EPG directories, reinstalled gbpvr, and copied over the saved config, batch, and EPG files. After doing so, for the first time, the config program no longer hung on return, so I was finally able to save a configuration, and not have to re-enter it every time I restarted the config program.
but...
I'm getting the failure to locate the device again. This is with the same bda.ini file that worked briefly before I tried to resolve the hang.
It was not working a minute ago. It was partially working (but hanging as described) before I uninstalled and reinstalled gb-pvr to try to resolve the hang.
But once again, your advice was right on the money. After a second reboot, it is now working, and I'm in the process of continuing with configuration (another 40 channels to go, and then..?). I don't understand why the first reboot was insufficient, but since tuning now works, I'm happy.
I'm seeing two anomalies now: One is that although GBPVRTray.exe shows in the process list, it does not have an icon in the system tray. If I kill that process and start it by hand, then it does have an icon.
The other anomaly is that when I click on Settings in PVRX2's scrolling menu, another screen that seems to have a horizontal green bar momentarily appears for a brief fraction of a second and is immediately replaced by the original scrolling menu.

This is a known problem with the current release. Its easily fixed by creating an empty 'skin' sub directory in the gbpvr directory.
