I have an analog cable source and digital QAM source coming in to my HVR-1600, so I decided to pull in digital EPG data and then map my QAM channels to the digital equivalents. This clears up the problem of having a digital channel mapped to an analog channel and then having to watch the same channel live in digital and record the same channel in analog because it takes from the top and the bottom of the sources, respectively, for those functions.

So can I change the channel number of the digital channels in the Channels tab to the HD equivalents of the analog channels. For example, my analog channel 8 corresponds to my HD QAM channel 8.1 which also corresponds to the digital EPG data for 702. So I mapped my HD QAM channel to 702, read in the EPG data for 702. Then I would like to use the Channels tab to renumber 702 to 8.1. Am I allowed to put non-integers or . (dots) in the channel field?

The channel number field is for numbers only. It only accepts 0-9 characters.

So, GBPVR tunes digital channels via whole number channel display only - not like a TV that uses a - or another character?

Tuning doesnt use this info. It uses entirely different information tune. channel numbers are just used for sorting the channels in the order the user is used to seeing them.

The major.minor is some oddball scheme from the USA. Sigh, why didnt they just stick with the rest of the digital world just use channel number as we know and love...

I have no plan to change GB-PVR to accept the entry of channel numbers of this style. Its not needed though, and you can give channels a normal number, and still access every channel.

It appears he's using QAM. For QAM, we're talking cable transmissions, and the cable boxes typically display a separate "channel number as we know and love" for each subchannel. I'd suggest he look up the number assigned by his cable company for 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, etc. That's how I handle it.

That's what I plan on doing (once I get the QAM side mapped and working) - change the channel to the same as my cable DVR box to cut down on confusion.

Thanks for responding. The only reason why I wanted to put an 8.1 or 8.2 in there in the first place was for WAF. The consistency going from the TV to the computer is a plus for her. GBPVR works great and I don't really mind that it there are no plans to change. Thanks for all your work, it rocks. There are lots oddball schemes here in the US. Why can't we just go metric, use A4 paper, and ditch CDMA for GSM? It many cases these systems make more sense, are more consistent and are generally considered International standards.

dennit:
I am in fact using QAM, and as you assumed I don't have a cable box. I have analog cable and I'm tuning the clear QAM channels on the digital side of my HVR 1600. I assume that the channel numbers that I am supposed to look up are the same ones listed in my EPG data, e.g. digital channel 702 corresponds to what my clear QAM tuning TV calls 8.1. Again the point was to maintain consistency with my TV so the spousal unit wasn't annoyed by different channel numbers.

In addition to WAF, I didn't want to map over analog channels. At least one channel (PBS) broadcasts different material on the SD and HD sides of their broadcast.
