1080p gfx card

just got a 1080p tv and get some stuttering on full resolution with my radeon x1650 so is probably due for an upgrade.

anyone any recommendations on a silent HD card? i would think the radeon is the way to go...

I've read lots of talk that the HD3650 is a great card for HD in gb-pvr. I have a HD4550 that I can't say similar nice things about - tearing, stuttering on 1080i channels unless I use VMR9 FSE. It seems to be a driver issue, HW acceleration doesn't seem to work with 1080i. The HD3650 apparently had similar sorts of problems, but the drivers fixed it some months back. I'm holding out hope for a similar driver fix for me, but it's getting frustrating; AMD only seems concerned with getting an extra 3fps from Crysis... but then I do have to admit that the HD4550 is very new, and there have only been 3 driver releases so far to support it.

This is really what drives me nuts about Video Cards today! I'm 37 years old and I shake my virtual cane remembering that a higher number meant you had a better card than the previous generation. PERIOD. No bloody GS, GT, GTX or whatever. Higher meant you had something better than all previous items.

Would it REALLY be that hard for ATi and nVidia to do that?

In the nVidia realm, I have an Asus 8600GS OEM Card that is quiet as a mouse. It has a HD out port that is nice. In the nVidia line, I find anything labeled "HD Ready" AND "1080i capable" will go 1080i just fine, regardless of it's number in the line (repeat above rant.)

The nvidia 9500 series I have works fine, is quiet, low-powered, and has a HDMI outlet. It was also relatively cheap. Go for 8800 series though if you need to play games, too.

in the end, i did some further searching and slightly adjusting my interlacing settings in catalyst control panel (setting to auto and remove the Use Pulldown setting (whatever that is)) seems to have fixed stuttering issues i had!

not sure if my full hd playback is flawless, yet - but is certainly much improved. it's hi res, but only 2d! you'd think it would be too simple, wouldn't you!
