The two posts are somewhat related, but hardly about the same thing.

Either way, sub indicated in the other thread that he didn't forsee CableCard tuners being usable in 3rd party apps any time soon. CableCards have been freed of the OEM-only requirement, but they are still dependent on the heavy DRM implemented in Media Center. No way will the content providers (and therefore CableLabs) allow just anyone to decrypt protected streams and do whatever they please with them.

You are correct.....I didn't read everything until after your post. Thanks for the info.
Even with the dreaded DRM concern, this is a good thing for many outside this community. I am a cable card user though I use GBPVR just as much but I get my only HD using these tuners. If the prices come down, this will likely be a boost to MS as W7 takes full advantage of cable card tuners.
Wish they'd give me one to test.

Doesn't media center record to unencrypted dvr-ms files which can be converted and processed? MS just wants a monopoly on windows DVR solutions and won't allow third party access. All a cable card is for is to make sure you only get the channels you pay for and support the ability for the content provider to prevent recording if they so choose.

I wonder what it would take to have GBPVR Schedule Mediacenter to record and the convert the DVR-MS to whatever format we want.

Geektonic pointed out this link saying Hauppauge will also sell CableCard cards. http://www.gearlog.com/2009/09/hauppauge...ard_tu.php If it will be possible with GB-PVR in any way, these would likely be the ones to watch out for, given sub's ability to support Hauppauge hardware.

I think sub would have to pay CableLabs certification fees which are quite high, so I wouldn't look for this anytime soon.

http://www.cablelabs.com/downloads/Cert_Fees.pdf
http://www.opencable.com/downloads/OCPricing.pdf

Now if someone were to break the DRM, then we could use Media Center to record encrypted channels (a GBPVR -> MC bridge could be created) and then decrypt and add the recording to the GBPVR recordings database.

Media Center now records in a .wtv format which is basically another dvr-ms container. You can easily convert it within W7 to dvr-ms with a right click and 'convert to dvr-ms'.
So far, not many progrrams will work with the native .wtv files but that's going to change after W7 is formally released.
