I agree that the OP should just set H264 to disabled in the ffdhsow video codec configuration - oh and in CoreAVC config select 'preferred decoder'.

I tried EVR in Windows 7 and I got the same issue when menus were overlayed - CPU use rockets up and video started to stall - and that was with PowerDVD codecs with full DXVA acceleration...

Thanks for letting me know about the overlay issue with CPU use.

Sub,

Is this something that could be fixed in the future?

I did some testing with the basic Asrock ION 330 and with EVR and Windows 7 32 I am not seeing what I consider high CPU. Playing HD h.264 files over a network was no problem. As an example I am getting about 25% CPU and about 45% CPU with the OSD using the bird sample mkv file.

mvallevand Wrote:Pob are you talk about your experience with the ION? I first installed mine with XP because I had an XP license and it was a bad experience. Granted I am a media extender kinda guy and I don't like to spend a lot of time tweaking codecs etc but I didn't get it to work

When I installed Win 7, it was a totally different experience. 7mc was great with almost everything playing after I installed the Haali splitter GBPVR testing with 1.4.7 was good too, but I needed AC3filter. I didn't actually check CPU usage with the OSD showing (I will next time it is running) because whatever it was, the playback wasn't impacted. I see the ION as only being a client so if it is 100% I wouldn't mind.

As for EVR I personally don't think you can compare the XP implementation with the Vista or Windows 7 flavours. I don't think they are are the same.

Finally I don't think vendors care too much about creating quality drivers for the home XP users. Why should they it is a declining market, they want new customers who want to buy new models with DX10 or DX11 features.

These are my opinions and I am glad your experience is different.

No I was referring to my experience with CoreAVC with CUDA support, as it worked fine for me in XP. Have not used an ION myself, but it should work the same as the 9400 also supprts CUDA. I am now using PowerDVD in XP and that also works with hardware acceleration.
Anyway now the OP has told us they are using Windows 7, it's a moot point.
But the problem the OP and I had with overlays using EVR in 7 is interesting, especially compared to your own results. It was this issue in GBPVR that decided me to go back to XP. I wonder is it is anything to do with the power scheme? I always use the minimum power scheme - not to save power, but to keep noise as low as possible, and this means my CPU cores usually run at 1Ghz instead of the normal 2.8 or whatever - maybe they are not cranking up when overlays are used? I will have to do some more testing.
