Multiple audio decoders running

Here's an oddity: I've got four copies of the AC3 icons in my system tray, and two ffdshow audio decoder icons. Are there actually that many running? What's going on?

The app hooks up multiple audio decoders so that its ready to cope with a channel with other audio standard (for example, changing to channel with AC3 audio from an MPEG1Layer2 audio channel). Only one is ever being feed data though.
