It doesn't seem to be a busy cpu that fixes the problem as I have tried two programs - one gets 100% cpu usage by wasting time in a low priority thread, the other in a normal priority thread. Recordings were bad in both cases.

There must be something magical and mystical about video playback that fixes the problem.

Thankyou all for your help. I have done the only thing left which is to re-install windows from scratch and it has fixed the problem - should have done this a long time ago, its just a daunting process when there's so much installed.

The thing to do now is take an image of the whole lot (less recordings of course) with something like Acronis and then in future a full restore will only take a few minutes.

Yes, I use 'savepart' added to 'UBCD' for image backups. Also important is keeping build notes. It takes a bit of discipline at first, but they come in so handy in the future if you want to take a fairly fresh image and add only some programs, and you just can't remember the trick to get things to work.
Another neat program is 'nlite'. I used this to make a WinXP SP3 install CD from WinXp CD and a downloaded SP3. This made the process smoother and required hardly any input to get windows installed. The Windows installation only needed a few more updates from the web before being fully updated.
