To be honest, I dont really care about having the source code to FreeNAS. Its not like I'm gonna change it. I just want something that works.

I didn't figure you'd want to change it - getting into an open source FreeBSD project probably isn't high on your list. I just figured a programmer would like having the source code available, in case you do want to have a look one day - see how something is implemented, see why it does what it does (or doesn't). Curiosity: good for everyone except cats.

Have you setup your FreeNAS box yet? Comments? Impressions? Just works and you have nothing else to say about it?

Dont worry, I got where you were coming from.

Its working fine, but I'm just using it for simple SMB file sharing from a single hard disk, and not touching the stack of other stuff it does (various protocol servers, raid, bittorrent, upnp, webserver, itunes etc). I just dont need that extra stuff.

Sub, how is FreeNAS working for you? My Maxtor NAS started making a click of death and it has trouble staying online, so I am trying to get data moved around quickly. I bought a WD Book Live to as an interim solution, but after losing an XP system drive and two different NAS disks in the last few years, I think I need more robust storage.

It was working fine, but it wasnt long for this world. I ended up attaching the drive to my HTPC, and sharing that drive and retiring one 'always on' machine.

Good to know, re-using old computers doesn't mean they will provide any longer life.

Probably for doing just SMB with a single disk freenas is a bit overkill. Like anything else it depends on what stuff you have on hand and what you want to get out of it.
