How are people recording their HD content from their HD boxes? I read that HDMI will not allow this but maybe component might?

I'd like to know of any solutions out there. Right now I can't seem to find any that are reasonably priced.

Thanks.

Pretty much the only way today is the Hauppauge HD-PVR, which captures HD over component video, and encodes it to H.264.

Hauppauge have recently shown a PCIe card with the same features, but also does HDMI capture as well as Component. The problem with HDMI though is that you can only capture video not protected by HDCP, and most set top boxes use HDCP. If HDCP strippers become readily available though (now that the HDCP key as been leaked), then HDMI capture might become useful in the near future.

It depends on your definition of reasonably priced. I got a Hauppauge HD PVR from NCIX last year for $165 on a Boxing Day sale, and combined with a Rogers 4250HD it is working great. It was on sale last month at Future Shop for $190. Sub wrote about the possibility of HDMI version too.

It sound like a lot now but I am pretty sure I paid over $100 for my first basic PVR 150 and that was the limited OEM MCE version.

Will the Hauppauge HD-pvr work with GBPVR/Npvr/G3pvr etc..?
