I installed NPVR on a Win 7 system using HDHomerun dual tuner. It locks up when trying to use Live TV, and all I get is an empty TS file when trying to record. I assume that Win Media Center is not letting me use the HDHomerun tuners, although the log seems to indicate that NPVR is accessing them. Any ideas about what I missed to get the tuners to work? I can't find anywhere that HDHomerun keeps a log.

Also, does NPVR only record to a TS file? How do I convert to mpeg to play on my media player? We were using MythTV for years on my Linux computer, but my wife uses the Win 7, so we are now on Windows again, and I'm hoping that NPVR will be the replacement for MythTV, and the DVRMSToolbox takes way too long to convert recordings from Media Center format to mpeg. I'm new to this, so sorry if I'm missing something obvious..... thanks...

The usual reason for this with an HDHR is firewall or antivirus software stopping HDHR from delivering data to NRecord.exe.

Yes.

There will be probably be lots of utilities on the internet that could do this, but nothing built in. Personally I just leave my recordings as .ts files.

Thanks. Yeah, I had missed the NRecord when I allowed NPVR through the firewall. It works fine now.
And now that it records, I found out that my Argosy networked media player will play the ts files without conversion. Thanks

To be accurate, it still records MPEG files, but transport stream (.ts) instead of program stream (.mpg).

Originally, back when the primary focus was analog cards, it'd record .mpg files since these are what the analog hardware encoder cards produced. Since then things have moved majorly towards digital, with nearly everyone using digital tuners. Digital TV is broadcast as a transport stream, so it makes sense to record in this format. There is also new broadcast standards like H.264, HE-AAC, E-AC3 etc that cant be stored in .mpg program stream files, which is another good reason to stick with .ts container files.

There has been a big shift towards .ts in lots of applications. Even Windows7 play these file types without needing extra filters installed.

Qualsite, for the HDHR I am pretty sure that MythTV saves digital files as mpeg-ts too but they can be processed by mythtranscode and I think some people automate that when cutting commercials. This should be no different than running post-processing in NPVR with ffmpeg -i infile.ts -oac copy -ovc copy outfile.mpg

This is not something you would want to do the h264 video.
