actually, no, that's not a firewall issue (though it does look like one); that error means there is no IPV4 localhost entry in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts; in that file you need the following line:

As per Mr Johnsonx42's sticky post No 3 links in Vista and I believe 7 - you need to modify your hosts file windows/system 32/drivers/etc in 32 bit not sure 64 bit so that local host only has entry for 127.0.0.1 - delete other line ::1.
That will stop it trying to access the recording service via ipv6 which don't work.

Cheers guys. Did have a blank screen once I'd got the localhost entry in, but realised it was probably a decoding issue, so switched decoder and it now seems to be working fine. Thanks again for all your help.

when checking it now I realize the post I linked to in the sticky thread just links to another thread, and then you have to read through quite alot of that thread to eventually get to the answer. I'll see about improving that bit of info soon - the thread is due for a big overhaul when the next NPVR release is ready.

There is no problem with hosts file in W7 x64.
