well, perhaps 'whim' was a poor choice of word on my part. thinking about it further, I think I use the retail store return policy (particularly Fry's) to combat criticism from my wife of my purchases. It's a lot easier if I can come home with something saying "look, I got it on sale, and if it doesn't work the way we want it to I can easily return it... we have a whole month". Kinda pathetic really.

It's hard to compete with the box store return policies (I boycott Walmart but I'm a Costco customer and yes sometimes I buy the lifetime size containers (as shown on Seinfeld) but it can hurt the little guys. Do you actually give your E-350 customer's a month return policy?

It's hard to explain my return policy... I don't exactly have one. I don't deal with the public though, just established business clients. If they buy something from me, it's because it's what I told them they need, and we've agreed on whatever it will be. It's up to me to deliver a functional item and to get it set up and working... if some component doesn't work it's my job to deal with it.

My clients are really buying a job (or perhaps an 'end result'), not usually a specific hardware item. I provide the hardware, software and labor to complete the job, and bill them for the end-result.

But they understand that they can't generally just change their mind and return an item once they've ordered it.

The whole reason I found GB-PVR 5 years ago was because of the support that sub had built in for the Hauppauge MVP. This was always my intended route. To not need a PC Client in every room I wanted an extension of my Media experience on. GB-PVR delivered that. With Martin's dongle the MVP's and GB-PVR got even better. Sometimes faith is needed. I don't control the purse strings in our house but once Mrs steeb had seen one MVP in action with GB-PVR I was allowed to spend more money to get an MVP in every room. Then when the PCH/NMT stuff came in, I just sneaked one in, under the payroll Big Grin Now we have 2. More will follow to replace the outdated MVP's when time allows.

I am always amazed, that just a basic box delivers pretty much the whole experience with such ease.

I first got my hands on a PCH/NMT a few months before sub announced that NextPVR had arrived. I come from a history of just wanting a thin client. This was my priority, always. It is a jump to get one, but once you have Big Grin

I still see loads of chat about this on the SageTV forums. Still people discuss the benefits of having a PC Client or a Thin Client. I say take the plunge. Spread the NextPVR experience around the house with no need for a PC!

cheers

Yup, I came a similar route via the MVP - at the time this was a truly excellent bit of kit especially for the price it was available at.
As it was replacing a cupboard full of VHS tapes and a couple of VCR's it went down very well.
As Hulu and all those good things are not available in the UK without much messing with proxies or VPN's they hadn't crossed my mind as requirements for a media extender.
I'm still sad that Syabas didn't make the box much more open - just think what it could have been by now - I don't think many developers have the determination of Martin to get things running. (although I spend little time on the nmt forum to see what is going on).

I have an A-100 and really like it. BUT, I agree with johnsonx42 that the availability of a client from newegg, frys or even bestbuy, would go a long way in making thin clients more popular here. I also started my gbpvr life specifically after I saw an article on BYOPVR about an MVP setup. Buying a system directly from China, especially a refurb was a leap of faith that I am glad I took, but am sure many others will not take. I have a good working system now and I STILL don't like the thought of getting another refurb.

Most of you know that I don't have the technical knowledge in this area to even start to judge how hard or easy it is to get us back to a low cost, readily availably thin client (like an MVP). I just know that I often wish that they existed. I would own several.

That said, I will restate that I appreciate all the hard work, blood, sweat, money and help martin, et. al. have poured into this project already and will gladly use what we have available, without complaint.
