How do you create a 'Custom Task'?

I want to be able to run an executable program from within NPVR. I have used Settings, Plugins to 'Add Custom Task', included the 'Executable' field and restarted Npvr. On the Main menu my new task is now shown, but it does anything, when clicked.
Is there more that I should do?, Should it be a .bat file or should is there more configurating that I need to do?

Also although the plugins list in Settings now includes the name of my task, it does'nt stay checked and I can't delete it.

Help? What am I doing wrong.

Do you have a menu item in config.xml representing your custom task? Does it look valid?

eg: <MenuItem enabled="true" exe="C:\Windows\notepad.exe" args="">Notepad</MenuItem>

For some reason the 'exe="C:\Windows\notepad.exe" args=""' part of the config.xml was missing. When I added manually it all worked.
