Ok I am back to being confused. This is what I am seeing for name in the database, when I try to have my plugin return the same string as my HDPVR

The name and resource name are not the same thing. The built-in recording plugins do typically use the name as part of the resource name, but they're not the same thing. The resource name is just supposed to return a string that uniquely identifies a resource, and that string could be pretty much anything. For example, you could a name of "Hauppauge HDPVR" in the database, but when asked for the resource name it might return a string like: "RESOURCE:" + crossbarFilter + ":" + deviceInstance, or it might return "<MAC-ADDRESS>:<Serial#>" or some other string that uniquely identifies the hardware.

Ok closer, what function/property returns the name?

There is a Name attribute on a CaptureSource class that returns it's name. This isnt directly part of the resource name though, so not particularly useful for generating the resource name. For example, with the HDPVR, its capture source has a name "Hauppauge HDPVR", but this is not directly part of the resource name. Instead it uses the crossbar filtername and tuner number as the core component of the resource name.

I do understand the resource name now and I can get it I am trying to construct something the will show up in Devices grid in the Device column.

Ah, for IRecorder plugins, it does use the result of GetResourceName() for the initial name for the capture source. If you're wanting to provide something more readible, I can probably change the interface for 2.4.x to add some GetName() or similar.
