I used the SageTV Import Utility to import my recordings into NPVR. They are MKV (MPEG-4) files that play fine on my server in NPVR. However, when I try to play them on a client PC it shows a black screen for a split second and then goes back to the recording list. They play fine from the "Videos" section on the client so I can only assume there might be an issue streaming MKV files. There are no errors in the log files.

Live TV and Recordings from a client use streaming. Streaming only works for file types NPVR creates. ie, transport streams. It cant stream other file types, since this would require development of new directshow filters etc for each type of file that we need to be able to stream (ie a ton of work). Instead, I focused only the file types that NPVR actually creates. Unfortunately there is no simple magic that can be performed to make it possible to stream all file types.

Would it work to "move" the MPEG-4 video to a .ts container or does it need to be MPEG-2? Thanks.

Sure, you can have H.264 in a .ts container, and stream those. Thats what our local broadcasts use.
