How do I set up the Network Recorder to use a capture device on another npvr machine in my local netwok? I guess the plugin has to be installed on both the local and the remote computer?

No just the local machine, it simply calls the /live?channel= page on the remote machine

Ensure you have this in NetworkRecorder.xml

<RemoteNPVR>true</RemoteNPVR>

I get an exception when I try to set up the NetworkRecorder under Devices in settings. Do I need to know the exact channel number on the remote computer, is that what is used when setting up channels?

That's not a valid xml file you don't have the opening

<NetworkRecorder>

Also normally the web server runs on port 8866 and I'd suggest increasing the time 2 seconds is not a lot of buffering for the web server especially for live tv.

Got it working! I had to delete the device and let it re-add to get the settings correct.

Yes to install the NetworkRecorder you must be very careful about shutting down the recording service before doing anything with NextPVR. I'm really glad sub added the capability to delete tuners in 2.3.6, it was much harder before.
