where i live ota atsc channels are broadcast in various resolutions. one channel might be 480i or 720p or 1080i. is there any way to make the output resolution to the hdtv the same as the input. if not what do most people use for an output resolution. right now i'm using 720p. it seems that my cpu usage is lower with channels broadcast in 720p and higher with channels broadcast in 1080i.

There is nothing built in that would do that. Most people just pick a desktop resolution and stick with it. This is what set top boxes usually do as well. Some TVs take a period of time to change resolutions, giving black screen, or TV video mode graphics, or undesirable flicking during the change, and this isnt something cable companies would want to force on users every time the change channels, so most STB just output a set resolution.

Plus computers do a damn good job of up scaling anyway once set up right
Make sure you use the native resolution of your tv

The right answer is likely ignore the science choose the one you think looks better. Each HDTV will have its own general qualities wrt interlacing, inverse telecine, brightness/contrast etc, and even each set in each home is different. Newer sets don't have one native resolution.

The only thing I have never really understood is running @ 60 fps in PAL countries.

My Samsung TV is 1360 X 768 native and 60HZ is the only option Windows gives for my video card in my NextPVR computer. However the TV accepts 1080p signal from my DVB-S2 set top box which it obviously downscales to its native resolution. Before my previous video card broke I could run the computer at 1080p resolution into the TV also but the Widows desktop text was almost unreadable however the NextPVR Picture was ok. There didnt seem much difference in picture quality if the TV or Computer "Up" or "Down scaled the TV signal to native resolution.

I have several options but 720p seems about the best. cpu usage is about 60%. if i try to do 1080p it maxes the cpu and get choppy picture.
