hard drive failed and loss of recording data

My hard drive failed and I lossed some recording data, but not the recordings.
Can I manually update my recordings db?

There were some utilities for GB-PVR that would scan a directory for recordings and build an .xml file that could then be imported. NPVR can read the .xml file itself, but I don't know if the utility would understand the metadata in an NPVR recording file; however I believe the utility will at least create entries with the recording names if it can't understand the metadata.

I've never understood why NPVR (and GB-PVR before it) stores the backup of the database in the same directory with the database. It ought to be stored in the Recordings path or perhaps in both places. I've made such a suggestion in the past, but without effect.

I'm not saying this is better than VidImport (VidImport is certainly much newer), only that this is what I used.

edit: I just tested it against my NPVR recording directory, and it does seem to read the metadata just fine.
