Ok these MP4 files are working prefectly now. I found I actually did already have the latest version of Haali installed - but when I had installed it I had unchecked all the optional things like OGG, MPEG-TS...and MP4. In other words I only wanted H264 support for MKV files.
Installing it again, but this time leaving MP4 checked, is what got things working correctly. So now Haali is being used as the splitter for MP4 files - gawd knows what was doing them before! I never had a problem with the video quality - I use the Cyberlink H264/AVC decoder and it's fine.
So happy that Dolby pro-logic is still intact in the AAC audio, so now using ffdshow for the audio I have surround-sound again. (Windows MC has no pro-logic decoder so was limited to stereo only on the MP4 files with AAC audio).
Still don't understand what a splitter does, but now it's working guess it does not matter :-)

Cool! I love it when a plan comes together!

Great! I don't have surround sound yet, but it's next up (I just repaired a 65" Sony rptv I got for free (had the convergence chips out) so now with a big screen I need big sound too!

I don't really know what the whole codec/container/splitter stuff does either, and like you - once it's all working it's not worth figuring out!

Glad I could help point you in the right direction!

Take care,

Steve

A splitter is responsible for taking a byte stream format and splitting out the audio/video streams to feed them to the appropriate decoders. For example, H.264 video can be stored in lots of different types of container files, like .ts .mp4 .mkv etc, the splitter takes care of extracting the audio/video packets from those specific container formats, and passing them to the decoders. ie, "splits" out the audio video packets.

They're sometimes also called demultiplexers or parsers.

Thank you for the explanation Sub!

MP4s suck! I still occasionally get one that goes out of synch - on both my htpc and my popcornhours! Why oh why did we have to leave something that just plain worked!?
