Server and Client both running Windows 7 and belong to the same HomeGroup.

I set up a client and a server and everything worked fine until the Server machine hibernated and then woke up from hibernation. I got an error on the client of not being able to access npvr.db3 from the server. I went to explorer and tried opening the Users folder from the client machine and it asked for a username and password (which I never set up in the first place). So I went back to the Server pc and clicked on Homegroup and noticed Documents were not being shared. So I started sharing Documents on the Server pc and all was well again....until I rebooted the machine. I got the error on the client again of not being able to access npvr.db3 from the server. So I went to explorer again to try to browse the Users folder from the client pc and it's asking for a password again.

I'd start by checking that you have \User\Public set for sharing http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo...ic-folders

I solved similar problems by turning off password protected sharing. See the link at the bottom of the article in Martin's post. Good Luck.

Well I tried just about everything and finally gave up. I was testing both XP and 7 on the same machine to see which one would work best as a server. So I decided to go with XP. (Funny since the whole reason I went with 7 was to avoid these types of issues.) However I did run into a few issues:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NPVR in XP can't be shared. After some forum searches the Solution:
Quote:The default location in XP wont work as a server as the location cannot be shared. I changed the location to "all users\shared documents\NPVR" which can be shared. I think some people create a "Public" directory so the location is similar to that used on Vista and Win 7. When you have moved the directory you need to change the location of DataDirectory with regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NPVR

Couldn't access Live TV or Recordings from the client. The solution was to allow NRecord.exe through the Windows XP Server's Firewall.
So far so good. I'm still am and will be in the testing phase before moving the whole family over from WMC.

I'm sharing files between XP and W7 computers without issues, but you need to have the same user with the same password on all computers that share files. I'd strongly recommend W7 before XP, especially if you are going to watch anything on the server. Video playback works much better on W7.

I haven't had any playback issues so far although to be fair i've been concentrating more on the client then the server. I'm not sure what you mean about having the same password? Both the server and client were both running windows 7 and were part of the same Homegroup. I turned off passwords in Network and Sharing.

In Vista and W7 being part of the same Work / Homegroup does not appear to be enough for password free sharing.

If you set up identical users on all machines with identical passwords then there is no problem - you can have other users as well.

Ticking the remember me doesn't work either!
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

I tried to stick with XP on the server but had to give up when I bought a second tuner because NPVR crashed when two recordings where being made. This is a known bug in XP which DVBfix cures but it got overwritten in the latest XP service pack so has to be installed manually. Unfortunately on my setup when the fix is installed NextPVR does an incomplete channel scan so I had to uninstall it when I wanted to do a scan then reinstall again for normal use.
