Yes, an MCE receiver and remote will work, many people use these with NPVR, including me.

There's information about this on the wiki. The only extra tip I would give would be that IRQ conflicts can stop these remotes from working properly sometimes.

Great, so I don't need to have Windows XP Media Center Edition.
But, will I need any specific drivers for the ir receiver that aren't in XP?

Is that what HIP is for? (I don't really know anything about HIP, just that it exists!!).

These are eBay links to some ir receivers. Would any of these work with XP? Some state that "only work with correct software".

Thanks for your help, sorry if I'm rambling on...

Human Interface Programmer (HIP) is a software package that lets you control multiple applications using a remote, and can also control STB's (blast). I use it with an USBUIRT and the nice thing about that is that I can use virtually ANY remote that operates in IR.

I have a client with XP Home that did not recognize a media center remote/ir receiver, and had to install the ehome drivers manually. I believe all other versions have built-in support.

Since I only want to control nPVR by remote, it sounds like HIP is more than I'd need.
Thanks all for your help.

It's free anyway and does not demand much resources, so why not give it a try Smile
