From Memory should also just be able to turn this off at least until Win7 (don't have Win8) in services.msc. One of the pesky WMC options that is set to auto but can be set to manual. Of course as usual with Windows any upgrades may turn it back on Iain is prob right just killing it big time! BrettB is prob right too, may be part of auto scan, not part of recording service? The answer lies in the fiddling with it

0 = disabled
1 = enabled

If it's not there, just add it. Reboot is probably required.
