I just don't know enough about this stuff. I guess I expected a "RestartRecordingService.exe" to exist that I could run, but that obviously isn't the case. SC commands appear to be used for only installed windows services, which doesn't appear to help me here. I need to utilize the NPVRServiceControl.exe, but just don't know the commands to use. Thanks for the responses though.

What about trying the normal command for restarting a service

net stop "npvr recording service
net start "npvr recording service

If it doesn't work in process maybe use start in the batch file to open another but wait long enough to return control to nrecord.

It seems like a bad solution though trying Win 7 seems more worthy of your time.

net stop "NPVR Recording Service"
net start "NPVR Recording Service"

that will restart the service. I'm just not sure what would happen if you put those commands in postprocessing.bat, since that is called by the very service you wish to restart. give it a try, the worst that would happen is that the service would stop but not start again until you start it manually.

edit: I must agree with Martin though, restarting the recording service after every recording, even if you can get it to work, seems like a very poor solution. What if you have two recordings, or want back-to-back recordings?

Just thought I'd finalize this thread a bit. You guys were totally right about putting the commands directly into postprocessing.bat, as it wouldn't actually complete the task. I'd have to manually restart the service through the right mouse click on the task bar icon. But by linking to a batch file, and putting a delay in there, it would work out.

Of course this is not the best option, especially since it wouldn't really work with live tv (no post-processing running) nor simultaneous recordings, so I upgraded the computer with the Win8 evaluation disc, and found out this was definitely a windows xp issue, as I'm able to use the Colossus stopping and starting with no issues on Win8. I'll have to see what happens over the next day to make sure it continues to work, but I'm breathing a bit easier about the whole Colossus vs XP vs the computer. As in I won't have to change out the computer. There were no more drivers or bios updates available, so this is a relief.

One thing I will say, by restarting the recording service through the taskbar, a simultaneous recording would not stop that was on the QAM tuner. Total surprise there.

Thanks for the feedback - even if we didn't FIX the issue with XP, it was nice to talk these things through.

Glad to see you made some progress. Strengthens my prejudice against XP for this kind of application, even though some people swear by it. The single biggest improvement I made to my GBPVR/NPVR experience was going to Win 7.

I think your QAM tuner continuing to record experience happened because NPVR spins each recording off to a separate program/process call ndigitalhost.exe that runs the tuner during the recording. There is an instance of this for each tuner, I think. as well as a log. This was a fairly recent change to NPVR, but I don't recall the reason. Anyway, I might be messed up on this, but Martin or johnson or reddwarf can probably explain it better if you want/need to know more.
