Need help configuring audio in NPVR with Hauppauge HVR-950Q

I am trying to set up NPVR to work with a Hauppauge HVR-950Q so I can use it as a backend for XBMC Frodo in my HTPC.

System: Zotac 1D11 with Win7 Pro. XBMC Frodo. I am using the Lifehacker setup guide. http://lifehacker.com/5981757/how-to-wat...dia-center

I Installed NPVR and updated with the latest patches. I selected the QAM tuner and it successfully found available channels. I tried live TV and video works great but no audio. After trying the included audio codecs without success, I installed SAF6. I still cannot get audio.

My questions are:

Which of the five audio types does the 950Q output? I assume only one and I should disable the others? Are there other codecs besides the ones supplied with NPVR and the SAF6 codecs that I should try?

For information, Windows Media Center works perfectly with the 950Q; scans all QAM channels and displays good video and audio. I prefer XBMC however and want to get live TV and DVR working in it.

It is my understanding that digital TV in the US uses AC3 audio. The LAV audio decoder (in SAF) should support AC3. From what I have read here, most people use ac3filter http://ac3filter.net/ Good Luck.

For US digital TV, you only need an AC3 decoder. There should be one that works in SAF. However, AC3 Filter works well also. The other audio types can be disabled. They are used in other parts of the world. You could/should post the logs for us to see what is going on. See the getting started sticky for how to do this.

Also, set the audio renderer to default.

Thanks for the prompt help. I downloaded ac3filter, set the audio renderer to default, selected ac3 filter in the AC3 dialog and disabled the other audio decoders. NPVR plays audio great now. I then set up XBMC per the Lifehacker tutorial and I now have live TV in XBMC. Thanks Graham and mikeh49.

I think there are still a few digital channels that have MPEG-1 audio, so if you come across any channels that don't have sound in NPVR go ahead and select AC3Filter for MPEG-1 as well.
