8.1 preview

Did you uninstall 2.6.2 binaries first? The 2.5.9 installer will not downgrade.

Yes uninstalled and deleted the public/npvr folder. I am curious though that something remains as I always get the warning about making sure npvr is stopped before continuing which I don't think you get on a fresh install
