Hi, my ignorance of computer-speak compels me to ask you to be patient with me...and use very simple language.

I just tried to download NPVR to my Packard Bell Netbook, which appears to have all the requisite power, capacity and video, etc., needed. I didn't get very far. Upon pressing run installation I almost immediately got an error message. Error opening file for writing: C:\Program Files\NShared.dll. My only options at this point were 'abort', 'retry' or 'ignore', so rather than ignore it, I'm asking for help before I mess up even before I begin.

Thanks, David (soapy)

Did you happen to change the default install location? That should have been going to C:\Program Files\NPVR\NShared.dll

You could try to right-click on the downloaded installer and choose "Run as Administrator".

Whurlston: that shows you I'm not very aware as you are right about what the address should have read.....and, did. I should have written it as you describe. However, I've just tried again and the same message (correctly addressed) came up. This time I tried pressing 'ignore', and, immediately another message appeared showing C:\Program Files\NPVR\NUtility.dll with the same options as before abort/retry/ignore. After clicking 'ignore' again, the program began to install.

The installation now shows as complete but, Having assumed the above 2 files would be missing, I looked in the program files under the NVPR folder and found both \NShared.dll and \NUtility.dll to be present.

Incidentally Reddwarf, I followed your suggestion and it made no difference. I still got the error messages. As a rank tyro, I had no idea if I could have done anything differently.

Now a confession: I downloaded NextPVR back in January and succeeded in recording quite a few programs from TV but with difficulty every time getting the service. I never once was able to just able to run the program without some problems on the EPG or bits missing. Sorry, I can't describe these in detail as I got a bit fed up about 2 months ago, stopped using it and uninstalled it. It's still the best I've read about and I have now come back to it anew. I want those recordings!!!

I going to give it a go again as I seem to remember that I got similar (if not the same) messages when I first loaded it. If it works without problems this time I still had other issues way back when....which I will ask about as they occur and this time I'll try real hard to make notes.

If someone can tell me how to find the various logs you need to help me get it sorted, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks for your help and future tolerence,
David (soapy)

The location of the logs depend on the operating system you are using, if you are on windows 7 or newer it will be in C:\Users\Public\NPVR\Logs, if you are on XP they will be in C:\Documents and settings\all users\ application data\npvr\logs. There is a lot of good information here http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...arted-info

Make it a rule to zip and upload the whole logs directory whenever you ask for support. BTW: The built-in DirectX support is not the same as the DirectX runtime mentioned in the prereq., always install the DirectX support, it will give you a much smoother user interface.
