yes, you can add analog channels manually. the preferred method is to just import them from your EPG data; since the channel numbers are "real", there's usually no need to scan.

i had completely forgotten about following up to this issue.

a couple of weeks after posting, i purchased an hvr-2250, installed it and it's drivers, and guess what? the pvr-500 tuners all work. go figure. the kids--and even the wife to some extent--have really enjoyed having the ability to record atsc-transmitted shows on the raspi/xbmc.
