In January, SiliconDust announced that the next version of the HD Homerun will have onboard H.264 Transcoding on it.
I was browsing NewEgg and noticed that it's available in December.
There's a service called Aereo.com that is essentially a DVR in the cloud. The company has thousands of TV tuners with direct line of sight to the transmitters. Users can watch live TV from their mobile devices. Aereo also provides 40 hours of DVR to their customers. It's not available in my area however.
What I would like to do is to host my own Aereo type of service from my home. I want to be able to watch live or recorded TV from my mobile devices while I'm away from home.
My thinking is that since the HD Homerun will have transcoding on it, nextpvr won't have to do any transcoding. It could just capture the stream, record it to a drive and rebound it out the Internet to the mobile device. Since the Transcoding is built in to the HD Homerun, I would expect that I could simply pause the stream and it would continue caching at home.
I'm thinking that efficiencies would be gained by nextpvr not having to transcode the stream.
How big of a deal is it that the new HD Homerun will have on board transcoding?
