AMD socket FM1 & FM2 difference?

Can someone explain to me the major difference(s) between AMD's FM1 and FM2 cpu's? If I were t build a high performance htpc, which of those should I go for? (No don't even suggest Intel...) Wink

Fm1 is obsolete. Fm2 is current.

Pentium 4 is obsolete, there is still a lot of FM1 cpu's and MB is shops. What is the difference in performance and architecture?

I would suggest Intel, with onboard graphics. AMD is several generations behind Intel wrt chip technology. I'm not even sure how they are still in business. I think they are protected by the US government, as an anti-monopoly strategy... Smile

no real architectural difference, but despite exremely similar pinout, FM1 and FM2 are not compatible with each other. FM1 supports the original 1st gen AMD APU's (integrated CPU/GPU) which are discontinued; these use Athlon II/Phenom II "Stars" cores with no L3 cache and HD6000 series graphics. FM2 supports the 2nd and 3rd generation of APU's, which use the later "Piledriver" cores and HD7000 series graphics (not GCN though, essentially the same as HD6000); FM2+ is now out supporting the newest 4th gen APU's using "Steamroller" cores and true R5/R7 GCN graphics cores (FM2+ boards will also support FM2 processors, but FM2+ processors won't go into FM2 boards). Naturally performance has increased with each revision.

to me, the only reason to use FM1 is if you can get a processor/mobo at a good discount. if you value performance over budget, FM2+ with an A10-7850K would seem like the only reasonable choice.

you might also consider the new low-power AM1 platform (aka socket FS1b). The 2ghz quad-core Athlon 5350 with a mainboard goes for as little as $100.
