As far as I have read between the lines gflo917 has got a NextPVR server running somewhere.

But there is a lack of detail which makes trouble-shooting problematic.

I did ask gflo917 to slow down and attack this in small bite sized chunks!

EDIT - No I see that now having read back through. gflo917 suspect you do not even have a TV Server set up?

man, steeb. you're good. everything everyone else has been posting has got me going in circles because it all sounds like greek to me. lol (i don't speak greek)

now that i've told you what i currently have setup now. no, i don't have any server, any tuner, nothing installed on my windows pc, or anything else that i've crossed reading through the comments everyone has replied with. steeb, if you can walk me through this in, like you said, bite sized chunks we are good to go.

and thank you guys for throwing in thoughts and comments. every little bit helps.

lol, it's not that. its just the whole server / IP / firewall thing gets to be a bit confusing for me. just cautious because i don't want to mess anything up. was under the assumption that the whole thing was more or less plug and play.

others will certainly chime in - but the fundamental point to understand is that if you want dvr functionality for live and recorded tv in xbmc, you install one of the included pvr addons - ie NPVR add-on, as a CLIENT. That means that a windows machine running NPVR, generally with some tuner card, stick or network device, provides live tv as well as allows recording of tv from a guide. All this works on windows machines using windows NPVR software, which can be a client or server.

The MX2 box, or Raspberry Pi, or other boxes capable of running xbmc provide a way to create a less expensive CLIENT than a full-blown windows machine via the xbmc plugin, which duplicates the functionality of NPVR for windows. Any client, xbmc or npvr windows, is configured by telling it the ip or server name of a machine on your LAN running windows NPVR, the SERVER, which provides the guide data, live tv, and recordings. I assume now you are pointing to a windows machine where there are no NPVR server processes running.

Do some reading up, starting with deciding what TV broadcasts or cable you need to source programming from - that will help with tuner selection - some or inexpensive, others pricey. Then you would walk through the NPVR server install and channel set-up on a windows machine. That done, xbmc npvr add-on can see the services running there.

so what you're saying that i'm still missing part of the equation. i still need to get a tuner (antenna) to actually get the tv streaming capabilities to my MX2? damn, this sucks. i should've read more into this before diving in. lol.

thank you for your help with this. i was good as being lost in the dark with the whole thing.

are there any inexpensive ones that you would recommend getting? is there a certain brand or type that is more preferred over others?

Understood. It took some digging under the skin to see what you were after and what was your scenario.

Bite sized chunks is good. And thanks for your positive feedback Smile It is nice to know I am not always a pain in the arse

My only advice at this point would be slowly, slowly, catchy monkey Wink

Personally I would recommend staying with setting up NextPVR now for your back-end TV set up as this is a great community and you will get a lot of support and advice now that we understand what you are after and what you are missing.

BUT just as one caveat that does mean some patience on your part. As you have found you need a TV Tuner. I have seen that post. Aside from that all you need is a Windows PC to install that card into. You will get advice as to what card you need depending on what source you have available for TV. Cable/Satellite etc.

And of course you need to know that the spec of the card will fit into whatever PC you use for your NextPVR server.

It is confusing at the start but becomes easy to understand in a relatively short learning curve.

Up to you. We have seen, too often, noobies who get frustrated too quickly. It doesn't sound to me like that is you so if you are up for it I am sure all of us here will get you sorted Big Grin

very best

Those are not what you want at all. These are some examples of what you want: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=hauppauge&bop=And&CompareItemList=-1|15-116-034^15-116-034-TS%2C15-116-028^15-116-028-TS%2C15-116-037^15-116-037-TS%2C15-116-086^15-116-086-TS%2C15-116-072^15-116-072-TS&percm=15-116-034%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24%3B15-116-028%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24%3B15-116-037%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24%3B15-116-086%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24%3B15-116-072%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24 I am not recommending these or that store, I just wanted you to get a feel for what we mean. I have had good luck with Hauppauge cards, but YMMV.
