I just reinstalled NPVR all I can get is the modern NEWA.

1) Is there a way to get the old version back?

2) If not, can someone tell me how to search for episodes in the modern one?

EDIT: Scratch item one... found that in the NPVR config. However, item two I don't see and prevents me from using modern

Per my edited post, I did find that .. thanks.

Part 2 remains... is there no way to search for episodes using the "modern" theme? That seems like a critical thing to leave out.

Modern is still evolving. You can default to modern and access the legacy screens ie http://localhost:8866/search2.aspx with another bookmark, and it is far from critical
