4.04.171121 New reader unusable

I can see where the issue is, but I'll have to experiment to get the best fix.

The attached patch corrects this issue.

I now remember the change that broke this (related to increasing the buffering for high bitrate US HD channels in live tv). It was a fairly recently introduced bug, so users of 4.0.4 who weren't up to date with latest builds wouldn't have been seeing this issue, which probably explains why we weren't hearing more about it.
