I still don't understand the wear and tear (assuming your recording drive isn't the system drive). There will be same number of block writes when you do the move and the heads on the recording drive will likely be more active reading old files from your R drive then the SSD.

As for fragmentation (I probably haven't defragged a drive since Win95 and I haven't researched it much as I record to a NAS which is journalled) if you are writing one file the fragmentation should be the same. If you are recording multiple files or copying multiple files in post processing wouldn't both scenarios cause similar fragmented files?

All I can tell you is that I observe less fragmentation on my hard drives since I adopted this process (which is quite a long time ago) and have had no problems I can put down to read/write I/O.
I also haven't had any further hard disk failures.
I'm not saying it's a panacea solution nor the right thing for everyone.
All I can say is it works well/reliably for me.

Thanks for supplying the scripts - I would have definitely used them a few months ago when my Recordings drive was a WD Green and appeared to be struggling with 3 or 4 HD recordings and a playback at the same time, Upgraded to a Barracuda and all was OK.

It may be beneficial to have all recordings first on the SSD, then all the remains of the day transferred in the middle of the night in sequence to the bigger drive for longer storage, but at the moment in the UK there doesn't seem to be enough high quality entertainment to make it worthwhile.
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

I agree on the "High quality entertainment" comment and have to say it's not me who records 4 or 5 channels at the same time as playing back a recording. Far be it for me to criticise the principle female in the house though Big Grin
