Sub's reply got me thinking and sure enough if you change the font in the Kodi skin to Arial you get the Chinese words too.  IMO that is preferable to not showing anything.

Yes, totally understand. The programme info should be from the English "track" if the user selects English. If there's no data, then so be it. The show title may not be selectable, like you suggest. In my profession, I also work with media files and have a deep understanding of subtitles and it's a similar scenario, whereby, if somebody selected a subtitle track which contained no data, we just show no data, rather than reverting to the default.

I think that is a lot less clear cut in Europe, where it is common for the user to be multi-lingual. For example, a user might prefer a French description of the show, but they'd happily take an English description (over nothing) if that is all that is available.

Could well be. Mediaportal doesn't show anything but the TV Guide from my LG TV shows Chinese too. Who is right and who is wrong? Probably neither so I'm happy to go along with your suggestion of reverting to a default if the selected option does not exist.
